Top Ten DNB tracks of the year.
Based on the number of times I’ve sat down and played them on repeat.
1. Porter Robinson - Spitfire (Kill The Noise Remix)
Some may remember Jake Stanczak from his days as Ewun - I remember him buying me a drink for an avatar on DOA one time, not that the drink was at all necessary for me to do that. Lovely chap! Mostly doing dirty dirty dubstep and electro house these days, this drumstep-cum-full-on-drum-and-bass-smash-step-waaaaagasm of a track had me rewinding the drop for myself about 20 times this year - and it only came out a few months back.
2. Hybris - Bossa Nouveau
This is the sort of track you can put with anything, and it will make anything sound more sophisticated. Swap-in the bass line after the drop to instantly change the character of anything else. But don’t be fooled into thinking this track is merely coriander to your DJ mix curry; nor is this cheese for your DJ mix chips. No, this track is every bit as enjoyable to listen to unadulterated by a DJ, and has a depth to match.
3. Delta Heavy - Overkill
Last time I was face to face with Ben from Delta Heavy it was at the Mo’ Fire video shoot at Movement in the year two thousand and something or other. This track is a whole ‘nother matter, as it sines and saws through my ears just the way I like it in an abundance of tear-out highly adulterated Skrillexcess.
4. Sub Focus - Stomp
A surprise release on Ram’s 100th ‘centenary’ release, Stomp was an unreleased track from a few years back. If Bossa Nouveau is the coriander that gives your curry a sophisticated extra layer of flavour, Stomp is the chilli powder that gives it a serious kick. Whilst I never did quite manage to visualise what it would look like if I jumped and kicked my back off the wall, I can guarantee that when this track bowls down the aisle there’ll be no pins left not dancing furiously. Strike!
5. Breakage feat. Jess Mills - Fighting Fire (Loadstar Remix)
This one evokes loved-one withdrawal in me every time - at least until that feeling is overwhelmed by a burning tear-out sensation as the Loadstar laser-drop of sonic death drills peaks and troughs inches through your skull. This one sets you up and doesn’t disappoint from the word go until the end.

If you can’t feel it in your chest, it’s not loud enough.
